Are You Making These 5 Mistakes That Keep You Stuck in Flare-Ups?
![]()
Hello reader, I know how hard this can be. You’re tired of the flare-ups and the uncertainty, and the endless guessing about whether each meal is going to leave you curled up in agony. It feels like no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get ahead of the symptoms.
That was me, too—for six long years. Every flare-up knocked me down. Every bite of food felt like playing roulette. I remember thinking, “Is this ever going to end?”
But it can end. I promise. It’s not magic, but it’s very possible. If you’re still caught in the diverticulitis flare-up cycle, it might be because you’re falling into a few common traps that I see all the time. These are the five mistakes I used to make—and once I fixed them, my gut (and my life) finally started gaining traction.
1. Still Eating Franken-Foods? It’s Time to Cut Them for Good.
If you’re reaching for processed or fast foods when things get stressful, I get it. It’s fast, convenient, and comforting—but your gut doesn’t agree. Every bite of that stuff makes healing harder. It doesn’t have to feel like punishment, though. You just need a plan that gives your body the right foods, so it can rest and repair without feeling deprived.
2. Taking Antibiotics Every Time You Feel Off
Here’s the thing: Not every stomach issue is a flare-up. When you reach for antibiotics too quickly, you wipe out the good bacteria your gut desperately needs to heal. It’s like taking two steps forward and three steps back. Sometimes, your gut just needs rest—and I’ll help you figure out the difference between a real flare and a bad GI day.
3. Adding Fiber Too Quickly (and Paying for It)
You’ve probably heard that fiber is key to healing, and it is. But if you jump straight into a high-fiber diet, it can backfire big time—gas, bloating, and yep, more setbacks. I made that mistake, too. The key is to build up slowly, starting with the right foundation. You can’t skip the early steps, but with the right pacing, fiber can become your gut’s best friend.
4. Relying on Laxatives as a Quick Fix
If you’re stuck in the laxative cycle, I totally get it. Constipation is no joke. But every time you use laxatives, you’re doing more harm than good—wiping out the good bacteria your gut needs to function on its own. Long-term, this is a losing game. You need to support healthy digestion naturally, and trust me, it’s doable. You just need the right steps to get there.
5. Constipation, Bloating, and Feeling Stuck
Constipation and bloating are signs that your gut isn’t balanced yet. It’s not just about more fiber—it’s about getting everything working together: fiber, water, probiotics, and nutrition. It takes time, but with patience, your body can relearn how to do this on its own. I’ll show you how to make these habits a natural part of your routine—so your gut feels steady and reliable again.
I just wrote a new blog post all about painful gas during a diverticulitis flare-up—and why mainstream advice often makes things worse instead of better. If you’ve been struggling with bloating, discomfort, or frustration over what actually works, this is for you.
